N1102.2.7

Section N1102.2.7 is titled 'Walls with partial structural sheathing' and covers requirements for energy efficiency. The allowance for a limited reduction in the thickness of continuous insulation on exterior walls with partial structural sheathing, and clarification that this reduction cannot be used in conjunction with the U-factor and total UA alternative compliance methods is established. The purpose of this section is to allow for the construction of a flat wall surface, so that wall coverings can be attached properly and maintain an aesthetically pleasing look with less offsets (which are more prone to water intrusion).

The model shows a partial exterior wall section which is constructed with partial structural sheathing, continuous insulation labeled with its thickness and a piece of vinyl siding. Notice the thinner piece used over the structural sheathing in order to create a flat exterior surface that the vinyl siding can be attached to without adding small offsets, corners, or other techniques which are tedious and more difficult to construct.
