N1102.2.6

Section N1102.2.6 is titled 'Steel-frame ceilings, walls, and floors' and covers requirements for energy efficiency. A cross-reference to 2 tables in this code which list the minimum insulation values for framing made of steel, and the calculation method required to be used when utilizing the U-factor table is established. The purpose of this section is to achieve an equivalent energy efficiency in steel framing as that of the assembly if it were constructed from wood.

The model shows 2 partial wall sections with studs 16" o.c.; one made from wood which requires a prescriptive value of R-20, and an alternative of the assembly using cold-formed steel studs with R-19 cavity insulation and R-6.2 continuous insulation as allowed per table N1102.2.6.
