N1102.2.3

Section N1102.2.3 is titled 'Eave baffle' and covers requirements for energy efficiency. The requirement for a baffle to be installed in a specific location in vented attics with air-permeable insulation, the minimum baffle size, and the allowed materials for the baffle is established. The purpose of this section is to assure that roof/ceiling assemblies have adequate ventilation to prevent excessive moisture and mold, as well as premature degradation.

The model shows a partial roof/ceiling assembly which includes a baffle installed above the fiberglass insulation to assure that exterior air can communicate through the soffit vent into the attic. The roof sheathing moves to provide a clear view of the baffle, but in reality the baffle is typically attached to the sheathing.
