N1102.1.5

Section N1102.1.5 is titled 'Total UA alternative' and covers requirements for energy efficiency. The allowance for determination of compliance with one table of this code by using a 'trade-off' system from another table of this code, a cross-reference to another standard for performing such trade-off calculations, and clarification that total UA alternative compliance intends that solar heat gain coefficient requirements must still be met is established. The purpose of this section is to allow for an aggregate approach in achieving compliant energy efficiency.

The model shows a wall section with a window, with the wall increasing in thickness, and the window decreasing, to symbolize a trade-off of walls with more insulation allowing for fenestration with a higher U-factor, while still achieving compliance with chapter 11. (The thickness of the frame of a window does not in and of itself actually determine the window's U-factor).
