R1006.1

Section R1006.1 is titled 'Exterior air' and covers the requirements for providing combustion air into fireplaces. The requirement for factory-built and masonry fireplaces to have an exterior air supply, unless indoor air is controlled to maintain neutral or positive pressure is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning, oxygen depletion, explosions, and the building from catching fire.

The model shows a factory-built fireplace, with a highlighted section of duct that will run to the exterior of the dwelling to bring exterior fresh air into the firebox.
