Section R1005.8 is titled 'Insulation shield' and covers requirements for factory-built chimneys. A requirement for a steel shield of a minimum thickness, for a minimum distance above the top of insulation and secured in place, which maintains an air space between insulation and the chimney in accordance with the chimney manufacturer's installation instructions is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent the building from catching fire.
