Section R1004.2 is titled 'Hearth extensions' and covers requirements for factory-built fireplaces. The requirement for hearth extensions of factory-built fireplaces to be installed in accordance with the fireplace listing, to be distinguishable from the surrounding floor, and where listed and labeled, to be in accordance with a standard is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent buildings from catching fire.
