R1003.9

Section R1003.9 is titled 'Termination' and covers requirements for masonry chimneys. The distance of the termination point of a chimney from buildings and where the chimney passes through the roof is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent the building from catching fire and fireplace exhaust from entering the building.

The model shows a partial section of a chimney passing through a partially translucent roof (for display clarity), with a translucent plane showing the horizontal dimension around the chimney which must be checked for intersection with any portion of any building (including buildings on different lots), in this case the roof of the same building, which then the chimney must terminate the notated distance above that portion of the building, as well as the notated minimum distance directly above the roof where the chimney passes through it. This is one of only a few sections of the code where buildings on other lots must be taken into consideration in order to verify compliance.
