Section R1001.8.1 is titled 'Smoke chamber dimensions' and covers requirements for masonry fireplaces. Smoke chamber height relative to the width of the firebox opening, and maximum degrees of incline from vertical dependent on construction method is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent the building from catching fire and smoke from entering the interior.
