Section R1001.8 is titled 'Smoke chamber' and covers requirements for masonry fireplaces. Smoke chamber allowed materials, minimum wall thickness dependent on types of materials used, surface finishing, and materials standards is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent the building from catching fire and smoke from entering the interior.
