R1001.7.1

Section R1001.7.1 is titled 'Damper' and covers requirements for masonry fireplaces. The requirement for a masonry fireplace to have a ferrous metal damper positioned a minimum distance above the top of the fireplace opening within the fireplace or chimney, and for the damper to be operable from the room the fireplace serves is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent outside air, animals, and insects from entering the building, interior conditioned air from leaving the building, and smoke from entering the interior of the building, as well as for controlling a fire's intensity.

The model shows a throat style damper being opened and closed.
