R1001.7

Section R1001.7 is titled 'Lintel and throat' and covers requirements for masonry fireplaces. The requirement for a lintel to support masonry above a fireplace opening, and the combustibility and structural bearing of the lintel, as well as the minimum height of the throat or damper above the lintel is established. The purpose of this section is to prevent structural failure, the building from catching fire, and smoke from entering the interior of the building.

The model shows a partial fireplace with the highlighted lintel exposed (prior to the installation of masonry above), and notation of the minimum bearing dimension of the lintel as well as the height of the throat above the lintel. (The translucent plane represents the vertical height of the throat above the lintel.)
